WaterPitcher 300x234 You Need a Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration SystemYou have now installed a water softener and poured yourself a tall glass softened water to celebrate.  You notice a slight salty taste and start to think great I saved my appliances from hard water scale build up.  BUT now I am going to spend a fortune in bottled water for me, my pets, and my plants.  There is a simple and easy solution…install a water filtration system.  There are a lot of options when it comes to water filtration from a pitcher, to single faucet, to the whole house water filtration.  For the sake of simplicity balanced with performance, we are only going to look at reverse osmosis water (RO) filtration system.

Softened water is not the only reason to consider adding a water filtration system to your house.  Clean water is vital to our bodies. Unfortunately, safe, clean water for drinking is no longer assured even in developed countries.  In fact, safe drinking water is even harder to find specially in industrially developed countries such as the U.S.

The majority of tap and well water in the U.S. are no longer ideal for drinking due to heavy industrial and environmental pollution, according to research articles and news. We have reached to a point that, all sources of our drinking water, including municipal water systems, wells, lakes, rivers, and even glaciers, contain some level of contamination. Contaminants range from naturally-occurring minerals to man-made chemicals and by-products. While many contaminants are found at levels not enough not to cause immediate discomforts or sicknesses , it is proven that even low-level exposure to many common contaminants will, over time, cause severe illness including liver damage, cancer, and other serious ailments. Even the chemicals commonly used to treat municipal water supplies such as chlorine are known to have significant adverse effects on the human body.

Tap water may also contain traces of prescription drugs. An investigation by the Associated Press has revealed the presence of a vast array of pharmaceuticals in municipal drinking water including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones. These drugs were found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans and in 24 major metropolitan areas – from Southern California to Northern New Jersey. The AP has mentioned reverse osmosis as a water filtration solution that removes virtually all pharmaceutical contaminants.

Which Water Filtration System to Pick?

The top reverse osmosis system for performance, ease of use/installation, and cost is Watts Premier Five-Stage Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Device.  This RO system is one of the most complete water filtration systems out there and is the one installed in my house.  It features a five-stage filtration process that incorporates sediment, coconut-shell carbon, and reverse osmosis technologies to provide great-tasting, bottled-quality water straight from your tap (and fridge with an tubing adapter kit).

Five-Stage Filtration Removes Contaminants

When it comes to water filtration the Watts RO filters in five stages to ensure that your drinking water is as healthy and clean as possible. Simply set up the system and the water passes through a 5-micron sediment filter that traps particulate matter like dirt, rust, and silt.  Just this step can affect the taste and appearance of your water. Next, a 5-micron carbon block filter reduces chlorine taste and odor, as well as other materials that can give water a bad taste (the salt from your water softener). For the third stage, another 5-micron carbon block filter further reduces chlorine, as well as difficult-to-remove chloramines.

Reverse Osmosis for High-Quality Drinking Water

The system’s fourth stage of water filtration is especially important, as it involves the passage of water through the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. This semi-permeable membrane effectively removes arsenic, lead, perchlorate, chromium, copper, TDS (total dissolved solids), sodium, and a long list of other water contaminants. It also removes parasytic cysts, such as giardia and cryptosporidia.

The fifth stage of water filtration utilizes a high quality GAC filter, which works as a final polishing filter when the water leaves the storage tank on its way up to your faucet. The end result is consistently great-tasting water at just pennies per gallon.

The Importance of Drinking Clean Water

If you didn’t already know, water is critical to proper food digestion, kidney health, brain function, blood health, joint functionality, and more. It’s important to make sure that the water you drink is devoid of contaminants. Thankfully, using a Watts water filtration device will ensure consistent quality for all of your drinking and cooking needs. In fact, when you use Watts’ high-quality certified water treatment devices and filters, your water will be free of chlorine taste and odors, particles, and many other contaminants that can be detrimental to your health.

The Watts Premier Five Stage Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration system is backed by a three-year limited warranty.

The Premier WP-5 Reverse Osmosis System is innovative in its one piece manifold design, thereby providing a seamless water path, effectively eliminating 17 different connections.  It is a 5 stage reverse osmosis system that is NSF tested and certified against ANSI/ NSF Standard 53 for the reduction of the claims specified on the performance data sheet.  The WP-5 System begins with stage 1, a five micron Sediment filter that traps particulate matter like dirt, rust, and silt that will affect the taste and appearance of your water.  Stage 2 is a five micron Carbon Block filter that provides a reduction of chlorine and other materials that cause bad taste and odors.  Stage 3 is an additional five micron Carbon Block filter which provides a greater reduction of chlorine (these are called PRE-filters because they filter in front of the reverse osmosis membrane).   Stage 4 is the heart of the reverse osmosis system, the RO Membrane. This semi permeable membrane will effectively reduces TDS (total dissolved solids), Sodium and a wide range of contaminants such as Percolate, Chromium, Arsenic, Copper and Lead. It will also remove over 99.95% cysts such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium.  Stage 5 is a high quality GAC final filter (this is called a final filter because it filters after the membrane).  This final filter is a polishing filter and is used in the last stage of filtration.

What Customers Are Saying (4 of 5 stars on Amazon from 44 reviews)

Great Tasting Water–”Installed about 6 months ago and it works great. Pretty easy to install and it makes our well water taste great. I would recommend.” – Unknown

wp5 unit purchased jan 2009–”I have replaced my filters every year except for the membrane unit which doesn’t need replacement. This unit has worked well. It supplies water to my kitchen sink. I also added line for ice maker. All works well. The air gap noise is noticeable but I have grown used to it. Well built unit. I wish Watts sold a retangular water tank instead of the round unit. a retangular water tank would take up less space under the kitchen sink.
You really can’t go wrong with this unit.  I had one small problem where waster water line going into kitchen drain clogged. Had to disassemble and clean out gunk. Minor problem…” – Bob T.

Good company, good product. Bought unit in March 2004 and am still happy with it –”Unfortunately a bug in this Web site is preventing me from being able to see reviews other than the first three, but it seems some people have complained about noise from the sub-faucet. I haven’t had that problem. The water quality has always been good, maintenance is easy, and I am pleased here in 2011 to find that the manufacturer still supports the product and has replacement filters available. When I bought the system I did not have any expectation of being able to use it beyond about five years, but I just ordered a replacement RO membrane and another year’s worth of filters today, in January 2011. The manifold, filter buckets, etc. are all solidly built. I’ve never had any problem with leaks, and my freezer produces beautiful ice. The only downside is wasted water. If my supplier raises rates very much, I may consider migrating to a zero-loss solution. For now, the WP-5 suits my needs just fine” – David V.

Conclusion:

With a high-production 50-gallon-per-day membrane, the Watts Premier 5-stage manifold reverse osmosis water filtration system offers a continuous supply of water for the whole family. State-of-the-art technology makes this one-piece manifold design easy to install and maintain. This system provides a seamless water path, effectively eliminating 17 connections. With a high production membrane, it separates purified water from the rejected impurities down to 1/10,000 of a micron. The five-micron sediment filter reduces dirt, sand, and rust. The carbon block filter reduces chlorine, taste, and odors. This chrome wave faucet features front push button dispensing. NSF and California certified, this reverse osmosis system lets users rest assured their drinking water is clean and safe. This five-stage system comes with a 3-year limited warranty.

The 64,000 grain capacity Autotrol 762 Logix control  is a microprocessor based metered water softener.  The Autotrol 762 control is one of the newest and advanced water softener controls available.  This water softener set up comes with the Autotrol 255 valve, 3/4″ connections standard, which works incredibly well with the model 762 microprocessor metered (demand) control.

The Autotrol 762 Logix control is a fully programmable metered control, that features an 8 hour power back-up which maintains time settings during a power outage. It was first introduced in 2004.The system also incorporates non-volatile memory to preserve programmed settings for up to 99 years. The softener can be “fine-tuned” for operation in any of three modes; high capacity, standard efficiency, or high efficiency (low salt consumption). The Logix control offers some of the most advanced features available in water softener controls today!

The Autotrol 762 Logix control system with the 255 valve for 3/4″ plumbing connections brings together durable contsrutction with design simplicity.  This translates into a highly reliable water softener system.   The dependability will give you years of worry free soft water.

The  design simplicity gives the added bonus if you need service done, because the 255 Series valve allows you a unique seperation capability.  The rest of the system is modular in design, such as the Autotrol 762 Logix control, giving the Autotrol system high marks for homeowner value and ease of use.

Key features of the 255 valve:

  • Fewer parts than other softener valves.
  • Single motor provides all the power to turn camshaft – no solenoids are needed!
  • Unique camshaft / flapper valve design – no dynamic seals (such as piston and seal or rotary discs) that could cause leakage through wear or fatigue.
  • Built-in brine control valve – no external brine float needed!
  • Direct acting system functions independent of water pressure. No pistons or diaphragms that require a minimum water pressure to operate.
  • Valve may be indexed manually without power in the event of an extended power outage.
  • True 3/4″ internal porting – many competitors use restrictive 1/2″ internal ports!
  • Energy-efficient – uses only about $2.00 of electricity per year!

The features that set the Autotrol 762 Logix control system ahead of competitors are the microprocessor, and a water meter located on the valve outlet. It works by using the flow of soft water through the turbine meter which generates electrical impulses to tell the computer the amount of water being used. At a preset time each day (2 AM) the past weeks water usage is analyzed to predict the amount of water need the next day.  This allows the computer to determine if enough soft water remains or if it needs to regenerate.  However, if pattern changes the computer can automatically adjust so the system only regenerates when necessary.  Translating into  higher operating efficiency that gives you lower salt usage compared to competitors.

Key features of the Autotrol 762 Logix Control:

  • Only one moving part – the turbine in the water meter. No reduction gears like other units!
  • NOVRAM chip retains programming information in the event of a power outage.
  • Self-adjusting reserve – keeps it to a minimum for optimum efficiency.
  • Flow indicator flashes whenever water is flowing through the valve.
  • Calendar override feature can be programmed to initiate a regeneration at a fixed interval if water usage has not been enough to trigger it – beneficial on iron-bearing water

How to Pick a Water Softener

How do you pick a Water Softener?

First question to answer is what is the hardness of your water?  If you don’t have that information already, than you can purchase an inexpensive test kit (on line or at your favorite Big Box store).

Iron and Hardness Test Kit(Culligan TK-2 Water Test Kit How to Pick a Water Softener)

Find the right size of Water Softener

You want to pick a water softener that meets your household needs.  First lets start with a brief overview of what a water softener does.   Simpley stated a water softener trades hard minerals for soft minerals in water. So a hard mineral such as calcuim enters the water softener and is traded/exchanged for a soft mineral (either sodium or potassium).  The tank contains chemical magnets referred to as ion exchange resin.

The ion exchange resin does the trading from hard to soft.  So the more ion exchange resin you have in a water softener, the higher the capacity it is. That translates to more gallons of water being softened before the water softener will need to recharge (regenerate) it.

Enter “grains” which is how water softener capacity is measured.  This chemical measurement is the industry standard. One “grain per gallon” translates to 17.1 parts per million. Average water hardness in the US is 10 grains of hardness per gallon (mine coincidentally is 22-24 which is extremely hard water).

Use a test kit to measure your hardness than you can use the following example to gauage your capacity need.  To calculate how much water you need to purify, multiply the number of people in your house by 80. (the average person uses 80 gallons of water per day). For an average family of 4 the calculation would look like this:

People = 4
Gallons per person = 80
Gallons used per day = 4 x 80 = 320
Grains of hardness = 10
Total grains used per day = 3200

The average 4 person home will be fine with a 32000 grain water softener.  Assuming you have 2 baths with showers and set your water softener to the low salt saver setting means your system would need to regenerate about once per week.  Drop a comment if you still have questions on how to pick a water softener capacity to meet your household needs.

water softener How to Pick a Water SoftenerThe Types of Water Softeners

Three basic types of water softeners.

  1. Timer Regenerated – The regeneration cycle is based on a clock. Assuming the 4 person household above a water softener would be set to regenerate every 7 days regardless of the amount of water used.  This set up will generally use roughly 8 pounds of salt per cycle.   This system tends to be cheaper, but the salt usage is highest with this water softener category.
  2. Meter Regenerated – This softener regenerates based on the amount of water used.  During the setup process you input how many grains your water softener is, the hardness of the water, the number of people in the house.  simply tell the controller how many grains your softener is, how hard your water is and how many people are in your home.  Metered systems advantage is that your softener won’t cycle while you are on vacation but it will cycle more when the out-of-town family comes for a visit. The meter systems are the more efficient systems and use much less salt than the timer setups.  This is the primary reason this category is the most popular.
  3. Manually regenerated – This water softener setup has a simple level that only regenerates when you want it to. The times you would want this is if you don’t have a drain near where the water softener needs to be located.  You would move the system temporarily to a drain and fill it with a garden hose when you need to regenerate the softener. Obviously you will want to choose a larger capacity water softener to minimize the amount of times you have to move the system.

I hope this helps give you an idea of the how to pick a water softener to meet your needs.  Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions.
